Mercury Head

2004 Cabernet Sauvignon

The 2004 vintage in a word, big and ripe. All right, two words. Almost universally the Cabernets from this stellar year show off lots of concentration, depth and of course big, ripe fruit. What sets this apart from other years in the Napa Valley are the supple yet structured tannins that accompany this massive fruit. At the end of the day this means the wines will be great tonight and hopefully for the next 10 to 20 years. The 2004 Mercury head is no exception. Blended with 9% Petite Verdot, the wine offers up layers of structure complimented by classic expressions of cherry, blackberries and subtle oak.

For the 2004 we blended wines from four of our favorite Cabernet vineyards, each of which brings its own series of nuances creating perhaps the most complex Mercury Head to date. This was also the first vintage where we began incorporating an involved oak regiment. When it comes to barrels there is no cookie cutter approach or magic percentage of such and such oak that is perfect for every wine. Instead it takes years of experimentation and refinement to "dial in" the type of oak profile one is looking for. We hope you enjoy what we've done with the 2004.
