Creative Director and Winemaker, Dave Phinney in front of Scissors Experience

BEYOND THE LABEL

INTRIGUE MEETS IMAGINATION

SCISSORS DRAWS ON CRAFTSMANSHIP FROM AROUND THE WORLD

What was once another entrance on Main Street is awash in a flurry of scissors, frozen in place or caught in mid-flight. There’s no door, just a punctured gateway into another place. Improbable and yet plainly real, the Scissors installation by Dave Phinney, made in collaboration with Nor Cal Glass, invites passerby to let minds wander and imaginations run rampant.

Scissors is something of an open secret. Formerly our old tasting room, it has taken on a reputation of its own, hiding in plain sight with its inscrutable façade. Fronted by an almost fantastical display, it openly alludes to our grandest ambitions while keeping its cards close to its chest. The artful collage of vintage newspapers gives nothing away while hinting at some kind of hidden meaning. You have to go inside to find out what it’s really all about.

And inside? Intrigue and imagination in equal measure, just like our labels. Without spoiling the surprise, Scissors brings the past and present together for our most compelling tasting experience yet, a drinkable story of the land and the labour (there’s a lot of it!) that goes its stewardship. Guests dive into seasonal exclusives and long-aged library wines in the same sitting, a neat way of seeing how our wines evolve not just with time in the cellar, but after years of experience making them. In some cases, wines don’t fully express themselves until a couple of years after release, making Scissors an even more valuable chance to appreciate them.

While you’re there, take a closer look. Every pair of scissors shows extensive use, a sign of the human hands that fuel craftsmanship. The parallels to winemaking are obvious, but less obvious are their origins. When sourcing the materials for this piece, Sam (Dave’s assistant) went far and wide gathering scissors from 18 states and 13 countries.

Scissors from around the world

Long associated with the tailors of Savile Row, it’s no surprise that several hail from England, from Sheffield and Norwich to Saxlingham Nethergate, a tiny village in Norfolk. In a similar vein, French couturiers are no strangers to a sharp pair, hence two pairs from Toulouse and LeMans. And from Eastern Europe, a few pairs scattered originally come from Karlovo, Bulgaria, Skopje, North Macedonia and other parts of Ukraine.

Next time you’re in town, take a moment to stop and smell the scissors. Just kidding, you can’t smell them but you can see them from the street at all hours of the day. scissors, our reservation-only tasting where ambition and creativity collide in our most exclusive and singular bottles – some available nowhere else, the natural choice for our biggest fans and most distinguished guests.
